St. Michael's International School has been a leading and dedicated provider of primary education in Kobe, Japan for more than 60 years. We focus solely on children aged three to eleven, delivering a British curriculum and maintaining a strong connection to the Anglican church. SMIS is the first school in Western Japan granted joint CIS and WASC accreditation. We are also members of Japan Council of International Schools and EARCOS.
St. Michael's International School is sponsored by the Anglican Church of Japan and was established in 1946 by Bishop Michael Yashiro and Miss Leonora Lea - a British missionary. The school was founded on a firm foundation of Christian principles, which continue to this day. It is part of an international educational tradition extending back to 1893 when its predecessor, the English Mission School, one of Japan's first international schools, was founded. St. Michael's is recognised by the Hyogo Prefectural Authority and is a member of the Japan Council of International Schools and the East Asia Regional Council of Overseas Schools. Governing responsibility lies in the School Council comprised of members of the overseas diplomatic and business community, alumni, parents and clergy. St.Michael's is a small and friendly school, which ensures that the students are educated in a pleasant atmosphere conducive to the development of understanding, tolerance and friendship towards people of all nationalities and creeds. The development of character and sensitivity to major global issues are important objectives, together with a firm academic foundation in all subjects. The school aims to educate for the future, so that the students acquire independence of thought and are able to cope adequately with the complexities of the modern world.
